I AM A LEADER: A 90-day Leadership Journal for Kids by Peter J. Liang, founder of the Leadership4Kids program, is a journal intended for boys and girls aged 8 to 12. Focused on developing the leadership skills and self-awareness of youngsters, the page-a-day entries that the child is required to fill in are guided every inch of the way by the most salient inspirational prompts and questions. Starting with a “centering” exercise, the journal keeper is required to keep track of the key incidents and experiences in their day that concern the topic for the week. The topics covered are different for each week, and range progressively from the more inward-looking “gratitude,” “courage” and “intention” to the more outward-looking “take action” and “make a difference.” Each new topic is headed by a highly appropriate quote from a leader who epitomizes the quality concerned (for example, a quote by Nelson Mandela is given at the start of the week focusing on courage).
What I especially enjoyed about Liang’s I AM A LEADER: A 90-day Leadership Course for Kids is its flexibility of approach, in that the text is made so simple that a child would be able to complete it without additional guidance from an adult. From the very start, the journal provides a link to an audio clip that takes the child through the “centering” exercise so that they can follow their guide, an extremely mellifluous-sounding Angela, as she does the exercise together with the listener. Liang is clearly a master of the motivational, and any child who completes this journal is bound to emerge a more confident being who has more self-assurance than when they first started.
